Every word of this is worth reading. Today, I had to physically *step over* a crowd of 8-10 people rolling & smoking joints to get on BART at Powell St. Yesterday, a tiny woman sat next to me & was SCREAMED at by a huge man through 2 stops, until she fled.https://www.city-journal.org/html/san-francisco-hostage-homeless-16980.html …
It depends — there are some things that I don't think a citizen should be expected to do without the help of police, like try to take a weapon or drugs from someone, or stop a theft. There are things people *need* to find the courage to interfere with, like a physical attack.

But when that woman was being screamed at next to me? All I found myself doing was staring a disapproving stare at the guy. And he did, at one point, start shouting "LOOK AT THIS WHITE GIRL, STARING ALL BUG-EYED AT ME," but that's what the net effect of that was.

Most people just tried to avert their eyes and not draw attention to themselves. A couple people started laughing when he called me a bug-eyed white girl. Adrenaline was flowing & I had pepper spray in hand if he touched her. But how do you de-normalize this in the first place?
