I think part of the reason I find trendy new sexualities like "sapiosexual" cringey is the implication that any firm sexual preference is an orientation, and thus that all the most important information about who you're attracted to is captured by orientation.

I'd guess the "sapiosexuals" haven't really thought this one through. If there's anything worse than having to turn a nice enough person down because you're just not into it, it's doing that with the between-the-lines implication that you also think they're too dumb for you

Being able to operate in the dating market without having introspected every nook and cranny of your own sexual attraction is useful, as is being able to obscure some of the reasons you don't want to fuck most people you meet

I had the same thought. I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you're trying to persuade someone of this deeply cringey position: stop, immediately, and don't even try asking for sympathy. You can't undo the mistake, but you can at least not make it any worse.
