I think you might be strawmanning philosophers today. I've personally known many people working through phds in philosophy, and this is not how they argue.
I'm describing my actual personal experiences, which can in fact be different from yours without being "strawmanning"

I haven't had enough exposure to academic philosophy to know if that's a fair characterization of how those degree programs work, fwiw. My experiences def aren't inconsistent with it. I'm more interested in setting better conversational norms outside the university campus.
