I think you might be strawmanning philosophers today. I've personally known many people working through phds in philosophy, and this is not how they argue.
These convos can feel actively hostile to real-time thought. This is my complaint about a lot of different non-STEM disciplines. Reading the Great Old Ones *can* be helpful but if all you do is argue about centuries old ideas I can't help but wonder if your field is actually like, learning anything.

Plus it just seems like a dozen different personality cults fighting each other rather than genuine discussion. It should be possible to dissociate ideas from their generators, but in practice this doesn't seem to happen with philosophy easily.

Philosophy training builds a habit of humility and deference to those who came before you that can be hard to unwind Especially so for those who continue with academia or philosophy grad school after undergrad..

I think it partly stems from not wanting to seem like you are ripping off the greats. But overall I totally agree. It's a shame that public philosophy is a joke nowadays because it also leaves a vacuum for grifters to fill.

When I’m not in that professional company, I make a concerted effort to avoid the name dropping partly because it comes across as arrogant and mostly because it usually undermines good conversation.
