If anyone in my family knew what I saw moving through the city during the day, they'd beg me to leave. If they knew why I stopped walking *anywhere* at night, they'd plead.

SF crime stats are a joke. Everyone already knows not to bother calling. At some point, I'm going to have to start driving everywhere and eating the $30 parking just to practice what I preach about staying safe as a lone woman.

I took this photo on my way home in Oakland about a week ago. Does this look like the wealthiest metro area in the US to you? Would you want to walk your kiddos along this street?pic.twitter.com/qyFLjDCqH1

FWIW, I disagree with the author on one point: I don't have a problem with people living/sleeping on the streets (or in their cars, for that matter) assuming they're not selling or using drugs in public, assaulting people, defecating on the street or breaking into cars or homes.

I fully believe the housed can coexist with the homeless if there are some ground rules. A good rule of thumb: what is acceptable for a small child to witness in public? The Tenderloin, currently an open-air drug market, is the SF neighborhood with the largest child population.

It depends — there are some things that I don't think a citizen should be expected to do without the help of police, like try to take a weapon or drugs from someone, or stop a theft. There are things people *need* to find the courage to interfere with, like a physical attack.

But when that woman was being screamed at next to me? All I found myself doing was staring a disapproving stare at the guy. And he did, at one point, start shouting "LOOK AT THIS WHITE GIRL, STARING ALL BUG-EYED AT ME," but that's what the net effect of that was.

Some people are happy to see working women degredated at the altar of their own ideology. Best to pay the sociopaths no mind.

"the passage of Proposition 47, another milestone in the ongoing effort to decriminalize attacks on civilized order." this article gives off massive boomer energy

Prop 47 is not a boomer issue.
