I share your confusion, but those studies claim genetics plays a large role, right? My understanding of the claim: genes make parents smarter, smart parents do "good-parenting" things like read to their kids, but really it was the genes that made the kids successful all along

Yeah, they do; but it's a mess on an individual level. I was read to as a kid, and I also had a step-parent who tortured me with no interference from the biological parent who married her. I cut myself off from both. We lack the high-res lens for this.
