I think @webdevMason made an argument in favor of crowd-funded research at some point earlier; I countered similarly, that it would actually lead to less freedom for researchers, not more. But I would be strongly interested in being disproved.
I think bith paths should exist and ideally be strong, such that if you'd prefer to spend your time grant-writing and have institutional interest in your field, all the power to you
I would certainly be in favor of it being a viable option to do crowd-funded research. But I would not want it to become an expectation of researchers in order to get jobs or tenure that they are successful at crowd funding.
Unfortunatly, past behavior of university administrations, and the focus of universities on income as a status symbol, strongly suggests that if a new funding source becomes available it quickly becomes expected of researchers to secure funding from that source.
