I always thought making non-competes illegal gave California an important advantage with regard to tech employers. So maybe these businesses move, but not very far.
There is a deeply poisonous interaction between essentially irresponsible single-party local government, and a major industry whose only options for change become either extensive lobbying and corruption, or else exit. A not-dissimilar dynamic to NYC and Wall Street in some ways.
Aside: always so weird to me that a town full of people ‘disrupting’ industries through tech hasn’t figured out how to achieve the same effect working remotely. They/we can literally invent the future of distributed companies, and live anywhere.
