SF lives or dies on its ability to draw top tier talent that could go anywhere. Yet amidst the country's worst housing crisis & a shocking level of property crime, filth + visible drug use, the city seems sworn to demonize & hamstring its own tax basehttps://twitter.com/thejuliamerz/status/1182690217263816706 …
do you see any similarities between SF today and Detriot back in the day? a strong industry sustains a crappy local govt until that industry finally gives up and leaves the govt in the dust
Great analogy. SF has perhaps just decided to ruin the one thing that keeps it going.
I've felt this too. At some point in the last few months the cw became that the city is dying, from an automatic-epicenter-of-tech perspective. Most of the best people I know have exit plans.
Any Schelling points to move to? I'm leaving next year but have only narrowed it down to no state income tax.

what's really happening imo isn't people recognizing it's as bad as it is (this happened years ago) but deciding so many people already recognize it that a preference cascade is unavoidable
really what people should be worried about is if a new epicenter can be forced into existence, or if everyone is going to scatter and the enormous benefits of central location will be lost for however many years
IMO it happened several years ago and we're seeing everything play out now. The last time I even seriously considered moving to SF or the Bay Area generally was back in 2014, and even then it would have been a drag on the sustainability of any hypothetical business.
When I actually got around to starting my company at the beginning of 2017 it was dead obvious that SF would be a bad play. Anything I need from there I can get over the internet, during visits, or from New York. The Bay's regional trajectory is Detroit.
