Like, will checks still *definitely* go out during a government shutdown? Are regions far from a diverse local agriculture industry going to suffer disproportionately? How will food banks and other extant hunger solutions be affected? How will the homeless get their checks?

Obv this is just a microcosm of a broader landscape of production & product movement. It's a good one, I think(?) because it's critical to human wellbeing & a lot of livelihoods. Plenty of foods aren't produced at any real volume in the continental US

Increasing transport cost of food may be blessing in disguise long term? New Hampshire used to have loads of pasture, but cheap meat (oil/transport) from the midwest stopped that in 1900's. More pricey food opens the door for local agriculture to become "worth it" again.

The (failed) revenue-neutral carbon tax proposal in Washington state from a few years ago was just going to cut sales taxes instead of mailing checks.

Important questions for farmers as well. Pretty much all grains besides corn are susceptible to global commodity pricing. Good for consumers, but really bad for farmers' margins.
