We're providing unhinged, violent people a formula for getting their names spoken, their faces seen and their manifestos read, if only they'll kill. Why are we doing this? Why haven't all the national news media *already* signed a pact against covering mass shootings?
I think we can follow the thread further than "because it gets clicks." *Everyone* wants to scour a shooter's life for mentions of communism or capitalism, religion or atheism, race, sex, mental illness, drugs, reddit, 4chan, good parents, bad parents... why?
Can we ALL please just agree to stop acting like vultures over carrion when something like this happens? Maybe we don't have to be so pathetic that we validate our political instincts on how different they are from the ramblings of the world's most broken people

That can get you the way, but I’m not sure it gets you the why. The why... so much of the meaning available to people in life now is not their own or in their own power, and so they look to raise up new Gods out of the groups they’re dependent on. And all Gods need enemies.
It’s a prisoners dilemma, so it would require some sort of organizing bureau with incentives or disincentives strong enough to stop the action, that my take at least. I am sure we could do something with societal pressure but that’s not my strong suit.
To use them as a political cudgel, obviously.
