I think we can follow the thread further than "because it gets clicks." *Everyone* wants to scour a shooter's life for mentions of communism or capitalism, religion or atheism, race, sex, mental illness, drugs, reddit, 4chan, good parents, bad parents... why?

Can we ALL please just agree to stop acting like vultures over carrion when something like this happens? Maybe we don't have to be so pathetic that we validate our political instincts on how different they are from the ramblings of the world's most broken people

The brutally honest answer is the same reason an oil cartel doesn't work. A pact could be signed -- but there would be economic incentives for individual pact signees to defect, cover the shooting, and gain the most viewers. If it sounds terrible it's because it is!

Journalism (what I went to school for) is about reporting facts in an unbiased manner. That means that you also shouldn't necessarily gatekeep major events & censor coverage. However, Journalism isn't being practiced by CNN, FOX, MSNBC. It's now just ratings & blood fetish

If a fan runs on the playing field during a televised sporting event, the networks will pan their cameras away, for fear of glorifying him. Certainly they can apply this logic to mass-murderers.
