I swear to god I'm not going trad, but the more I think about it the dumber it seems to encourage young people to do some serial monogamy before partnering up — like people whose only practice is in explicitly disposable relationships would be any better at the real deal

They're not explicitly disposable, just as a practical matter they are because everybody's awful when they're young and our relationships are all almost all doomed to failure until we're more mature.

Except that this isn't really borne out in the data

What’s the data you’re referring to? Pre-marriage relationships are a priori shorter than marriages, and most marriages last. Almost everyone I know took some time to grr wet mature enough for the real thing. Adolescence lasts decades too long, sure, but that’s another issue.

Does the dataset you’re referring to restrict itself to first marriages?

Interesting stats. Looks like you should marry at about age 30 for best results:pic.twitter.com/ntzElCob87

I meeeeean Look, I don't think this data should actually inform an individual's marriage plans; there are a lot of factors that won't be captured But it does work against the idea that the longer you wait, the better, because people become more marriageable the longer they wait

Naturally there’s a pretty strong selection bias. If your marriage is after 45, you may just not be the marryin’ type.

At the other tail, I'm curious how many of these are "shotgun marriage" situations involving accidental pregnancy

Lots of divorce pressure from the surprising number of forced child marriages too (167,000 under 18 in the US between 2000 and 2010 ~90% with an adult spouse). I’m getting off topic, but see http://unchainedatlast.org/ or a summary of the issue from sophhttps://altcensored.com/watch?v=9hMe92apqac …
