I agree in rejecting the "practice" lens... but I do think that it's fine to encourage people to date ~however they want~ if they don't yet know enough about their future life goals to make any commitments.

Expectations around VOI and informed decision-making are extremely socially constructed; 18 year olds sign up for military service and sign contracts for 5-6 figure debt routinely. These are much harder to get out of than a committed relationship, arguably even after marriage
