I swear to god I'm not going trad, but the more I think about it the dumber it seems to encourage young people to do some serial monogamy before partnering up — like people whose only practice is in explicitly disposable relationships would be any better at the real deal

All of these problems are the result of a consumption-focused society/economy. It is no surprise that folks have internalized the ethos into their most intimate relationships. Until this changes at scale, there is no way out.

Asking "is this person the best I can do" is like asking "is this the best seed to plant in my garden?" How TF are you supposed to know what seed will make the "best" plant? Try and define "best you can do" and you've already lost. Not just in love but in life.

It seems weird to frame things around settling, i advise friends to think "does this person help me be the best version of myself? Does our union achieve that for both of us? Does it free my mind from dating so I can do x,y,z?"

I've met enough ambitious couples who don't plan on kids at all who view relationships this way. Like you said, if you keep questioning it, probably better to move on.
