Synchronised eating, synchronised sleeping, synchronised studying—should all be like synchronised swimming: for enthusiasts only.
We treat routine like a terminal value against which no tradeoffs are worth making, but IMO this is less a misunderstanding than a lie. Like many features of child life, it would persist for the convenience of adults even if it were definitively shown to be net-harmful for kids

I've met many folks well past forty whose chief -- sometimes *sole* -- point of pride in their work (40% of their waking lives!) is "I'm never late, and I don't take sick days." We treat kids like our main goal is readying them for that life.
