Similarly, I find it almost... creepy? Something like creepy?... when someone has a really complex and unusual belief in common with me but arrived at it from steps that seem utterly wrong, totally illegible or markedly insane

One intuitively expects that converting (arguing sense into) a "heathen" would be a lot of work and doesn't bother. On the other hand, the "heretic" is already almost right, this offers a better intuitive payoff/effort ratio.
