As far as I can tell, the plastic straw is basically the only ubiquitous plastic product that some adorable sea creature *hasn't* used to murder itself in view of a diver cam, and I can only imagine how much worse things will get when some asshole octopus figures that one out

This makes no sense at all since 95% or more of all ocean plastic comes from poor Asian countries w/o proper sanitation. All US straws get recycled or sent to a landfill dump. Only a rare straw that goes down a storm drain could possibly end up in the ocean.

The amount of extra pollution caused by NIMBY policies that block construction near public transportation are several orders of magnitude more severe - but yeah, let's keep wasting time pushing for policies that have a microscopic impact but piss everyone off.

This tendency is not accidental. Another example was restrictions on residential water usage during the drought in CA, when data showed that a very large majority of water usage was non-residential.

Here in Taiwan, the home of bubble tea, they have started banning the plastic straws (for drinks that are not take-away). Though it seems that not at all establishments follow the rules. Even major franchises.
