I just want to feel safe when I use public transit and walk around the city. I'm not strong or fast enough to protect myself if someone decides to hurt me. It's terrifying to know that violent, impulsive men are learning that the police are broadly uninterested.

An interesting product of this issue in many areas has been the development of women-led women-only concealed carry classes. They're an excellent and extremely useful step available to many women, though not in most cities in the state where elite Hollywood men have power.
I think about the dangerousness of SF all the time—I haven’t lived out here for long, but my impression is that the authorities are peculiarly indifferent to the challenges posed to the most vulnerable citizens.
And by vulnerable I also mean those who are ill in one way or another, and might cause harm not from malice, but psychological ailment. I’ve lived in a lot of big cities, and I’ve never seen such officially-stamped indifference.

What else are the police even DOING if they’re not stopping physical assaults, violent threats, property crime, etc? Literally - what crimes are they still enforcing? Why do they exist?
