I think your critique is accurate, but...Do you see importance in designing spaces for collective catharsis? If so, how would they be designed in order to avoid the critique you are giving?
tbh, I've known a few people who've spent small fortunes on the psyche-spiritual mishmash, & they're not particularly productive or happy people. The people I aspire to be like wake up & build stuff. Correlation-not-causation, etc., but I'm not convinced this is good for people.
I agree with @cognazor that people's felt experience of connecting with something outside their ordinary consciousness should not be belittled. I Agree with @webdevMason that the particular content of this connecting, the generalized self-shame, may be more harmful than helpful.
And I agree with you, Greg, the former perspective is all I was trying to highlight, while acknowledging the latter.
These people are awfully young to take on 6-fig debt to play at apologizing to plants in the world's least interesting social game, but more importantly, I'd like to see people treat the world like a place where there is work to be done, problems can be solved. Guilt is a waste.
On your latter point, I agree. I would just add that sometimes emotional work is needed in order to get to that can-do attitude. And I am not talking about wallowing in guilt, but rather, a more general catharsis.
