"It did not seem like a moral victory for our children to grow up hating their species and themselves" I imagine not. Yet families like this one, with the means to do otherwise... don't. The Greater Good is a hungry god. If it demands to eat your children, who are you to refuse?

What "god" are we serving here? Hate, in another hat. Increasingly we reject Hate pointed outward. Now it points in, promising we'll save ourselves via institutional machinery for self-loathing. Can the kids learn Love? Perhaps not from the parents who fed them to the monster.

The stakes are high and growing, and we seem intent on turning our children into weapons to be used against themselves. We could say, You are the universe's resistance against entropy. You are *matter* that can *love* — how cool is that? I love you. You've got this.

Grateful to have had the chance to get close enough to say this to a few kids — I've been paying attention. I think you're something special. I know this is hard. It's unfair. But I see how hard you're trying. I'm so excited to see where you go. Bring us along, if you can.

The good thing about kids and people is that ultimately we get to decide who we are, how we think, what we stand for, and the actions we take.
-
...regardless of the ideology we grow up in, the hurts we feel, and obstacles we overcome.. we still get to disabuse ourselves of being responsible for others injustices, and can choose to take small action in holding ourselves accountable for group outcome

And sometimes you grow out of things; hopefully those kids will.

I'm not sure why a parent would saddle their kid with self-hate.

Honestly, I remember a similar feeling from my childhood. We absorbed a lot of the idea that adults had been wrong, had destroyed the world and themselves by smoking, eating fat, using plastic six-pack rings and CFC hairsprays, and so on. You see it in some early Simpsons humor.
