"It did not seem like a moral victory for our children to grow up hating their species and themselves" I imagine not. Yet families like this one, with the means to do otherwise... don't. The Greater Good is a hungry god. If it demands to eat your children, who are you to refuse?

What "god" are we serving here? Hate, in another hat. Increasingly we reject Hate pointed outward. Now it points in, promising we'll save ourselves via institutional machinery for self-loathing. Can the kids learn Love? Perhaps not from the parents who fed them to the monster.

The stakes are high and growing, and we seem intent on turning our children into weapons to be used against themselves. We could say, You are the universe's resistance against entropy. You are *matter* that can *love* — how cool is that? I love you. You've got this.

Grateful to have had the chance to get close enough to say this to a few kids — I've been paying attention. I think you're something special. I know this is hard. It's unfair. But I see how hard you're trying. I'm so excited to see where you go. Bring us along, if you can.

That's exactly how I read this. And it was a painful read: Packer somewhat correctly feeling it's so wrong, yet also somewhat proud of his kids' sensitivities. Caught up in his own class anxieties and moral vanities (
@wesyang) incapable of decisive action for his kids.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

If your child comes home from school with these ideas, this is what school is teaching them. Pull them out. Homeschool. Teach them yourself.

Fight for your child/interact within that environment. Show them your strength. They'll learn from it. A confident, informed parent has tremendous power. Move them if you must. Home schooling is almost always a massive disaster. Suddenly, they are Other. Your role has changed.

really? I said plenty of stuff like that when I was a kid, and I’m basically fine. Some kids strongly internalize and extrapolate whatever belief system they’re exposed to. Some little girls want to be cloistered nuns.
