The total area of potential idea-space we could be playing with in education is immense and re-exploding on a regular basis, but we can't break out of the narrowest local peaks despite all but *knowing* they're disappointingly close to sea level

It's because they think that (1) the human mind is mechanical, and therefore (2) education is close to engineering. The concepts of creativity, interests, and fun do not appear in this worldview.

"It's very hard for me to understand how we managed to dig this rut." One word explains it: Tenure. To get tenure, professors must do some kind of "research" and get it publish. The demand for research/"research" drives a lot of weird fads and other crazy stuff.
If you've not been in academia it's hard to grasp how much the research incentive system warps almost every other decisions around research/"research" and academic life.
