Note the implied narrative here. Back in the real world, it's perfectly reasonable to have serious qualms with elective abortions long before ~27 weeks, when this woman had her abortion. >90% chance of survival had she delivered on the day. This is not an extremist position.
It seems like a cop out to cite some magical, undefined level of development as the relativistic basis for the rights of individualism. It reads like people recognizing that it’s a hard problem, and just punting, throwing their hands up in mock bafflement.
Tough cookies; at one end you've got a single diploid cell, and at the other end you've got a newborn infant. "It seems like what's going on between those is pretty morally relevant" isn't magical thinking
It’s all science. Until you pick that magical moment. Then it’s at best circularly reasoned and therefore not in any way scientific. Some pick heartbeat, some pick pain, whatever you pick, that’s all it is, something you picked. Tough problem, cop out.
Law is full of bright lines that don't really make sense — statutory rape becomes sex on the 18th birthday, driving becomes drunk driving at .08% BAC on the dot, etc. To draw lines is practical, but it's not justifiable to rest on them as absolute moral dividers
Could this be the one time in human history where the side that has a more restrictive definition of which humans have rights, is the correct side? Perhaps, but I’m not convinced it’s likely to be the case.
I think it's absolutely nuts — like, within the realm of delusion or psychosis — to truly believe that a day-3 embryo (~8 cells) is morally equivalent to a newborn baby. But I don't think there are many people who actually believe that; they're just drawing their own bright line.
Finally someone who gets it. The idea that a fertilized egg is the moral equivalent of a human being is an unscientific belief not based on facts. The idea that 7-month old fetus is the moral equivalent of a fertilized egg is just as unscientific and non-factual.
