Why would a readership expect infallible understanding...? What else would they expect, after a decade or two consuming information-as-fact with little deviation in classroom environments?
I know we're not supposed to tell journalists to learn to code, but it really might make for better journalists, because it's one of the few activities with an assumption-result cycle fast enough to force the stubborn human mind to see how wrong it is nearly all of the time
Learning to code opened so many doors for me while at the same time hammering home that what I think is/should be happening doesn’t really mean much

Both — I think this is a self-perpetuating mechanism; the result is itself a driver
Nothing like knowing you are correct after 5 iterations, running the code and seeing an error message on your screen in front of other people. Journalism has no blue screen of death.
It might be your code, it might be *their* code, it might be your machine, it might be some cloud service hosting some library... but whatever the case, it doesn't run, pal. "Current events" are *much* more complicated, you just don't get the error message when you pontificate
Programming teaches epistemic modesty. What are some other good teachers? The hard sciences?
