I realize that this is an abrasive thing to say, but I see this corrosive mindset everywhere. (Your schools are terrible? Put your kids there anyway.) It's not wrong to put your own mask on first before assisting the passenger nearest you, and then them before the other rows.

My mom always said, "Slow down and look both ways even when the light is green. Just because it's not your fault won't change the fact that you are dead." I think this applies to most situations in life. It's not victim blaming to give good advice.
