I didn't know I was nearsighted until 9th grade. I remember in 7th asking the teacher to focus the overhead more. Everyone said "it is focused" but somehow I never considered that my eyes were broken.
I put on my mom's glasses when I was 12 and was astounded that I could see the leaves on trees. Unlike you I hadn't given a shit about doing well in elementary or middle school.
I had to really convince my Mom I couldn’t see and even then she didn’t take me to the optometrist for days at first because she ‘didn’t like my tone’ 
Seems difficult to replicate. If I could just become a child at any given time I suspect I'd be heavily inclined to find ways to exploit that ability to shoplift and not get caught or something similar.
