I like this Q because it also attacks the deeper idea some ppl have that cynicism/bitterness/pessimism is somehow a cooler aesthetic or a more enlightened way of being.

I think there's a... fundamental dissatisfaction?... that drives a lot of smart people to obsess sufficiently to gain exceptional expertise. But it's not incompatible with optimism — there's a lens in which a wide gap between us & what we could be represents great potential
