This dialogue between @BretWeinstein and students at Evergreen State is just... horrifying. This is what happens when one party is trying desperately to have a conversation and the other party is intent on using language as indiscriminate weaponryhttps://youtu.be/AOht7EXA8hs?t=316 …

Replying to @webdevMason @BretWeinstein
A few points: 1) I don’t find the student behavior horrifying, not because they are paragons of wisdom, but because this seems like typical behavior among a subset of enthusiastic college students throughout history.

2) Weinstein was well-intentioned and patient given the circumstances.

3) However, at no point in this clip did he acknowledge the feelings of the complaining students.

Perhaps he did so at other times, but here he kept defending his own intentions, which is certainly understandable (he was unfairly misrepresented) but often unproductive for resolving conflicts, whether with students, neighbors, a partner, a work colleague, a sibling or a child.

4) Resolving conflict requires a lot of listening, rephrasing of the other’s message, and acknowledging their feelings. This was, in fact what a lot of students were looking for.

Maybe this wouldn’t have helped, but in my experience it is crucial to establishing the trust that is necessary for reasonable discussion (assuming that’s still necessary – often by this time it’s beside the point because the logic wasn’t really contested).

Frankly, I think you're completely misreading the situation. It's pretty apparent to me that the key dynamic driving this interaction is dominance, not hurt. And I think you perhaps think too little of young adults if you don't see any of this as absolutely horrifying.
