Some advice from this podcast: if you require emergency medical care in the US, are given an agreement to pay & believe you may be subject to predatory billing, sign "I did not read." The ER *must* provide emergency care & this *may* provide some cover if you can't or don't payhttps://twitter.com/webdevMason/status/1167517720830603264 …

This is a good option for chronic issues & preventative care, when you have time to look at what's available to you — I'm talking about what steps you can take if you need emergency care & are concerned about predatory billing. Hospitals are not req'd to provide all types of care

Worse yet, your federal taxes fund hospital ERs directly. Since hospitals take federal ER subsidies, they should also agree to a price mechanism and at an absolute minimum disclose the prices. In an emergency, who can negotiate price anyway?

And if you push back just a little, the bill may magically get slashed 70%. Like “ok nvm those $25,000 were just for fun lol”

Nobody working at the ER (or non-ER medicine in many cases) has any idea about prices. Sometimes the billing department doesn’t even know.

It is so strange to imagine health care working this way. It just seems ridiculous when you’re used to universal health care, tbh. Dumb and cruel.

I dislocated my shoulder last week. I have a vague memory of signing something on admission to the ER, but I also would have given up the launch codes to the nukes under that much pain.
