Aside from wasting years playing a game that nobody can win, you also face a pretty high likelihood that the person who stayed with you on the condition that they can expect you to leave at any moment may lose interest as soon as you go off-script.
There is a trust arc that has to develop organically, but there are also plenty of people who don't know what they want with each other, fear commitment or simply lie about their willingness to commit. If you send these signals, it'll be reflected in the people you attract.
If both parties are honest with themselves and each other and manage to take appropriate actions, arrangements where one of them wont commit will end pretty soon. Perhaps less accurate in cases where one party lies (self-aware or not).
I think you must be willing to walk away over deal-breakers anytime, but over time deal breakers are less likely to happen, because you know each other.
