Aside from wasting years playing a game that nobody can win, you also face a pretty high likelihood that the person who stayed with you on the condition that they can expect you to leave at any moment may lose interest as soon as you go off-script.

There is a trust arc that has to develop organically, but there are also plenty of people who don't know what they want with each other, fear commitment or simply lie about their willingness to commit. If you send these signals, it'll be reflected in the people you attract.
