Every game I invented on the playground in middle school had a rule banning it within a week. Imagination was forbidden. We eventually had to just sit down on the black top and refuse to play. Small, Christian private school is hell.

Despite being raised in a cult, and every other outlet of science and exploration being seen as evil, my parents did throw us all outside to play in the woods. I can't imagine who I would be without at least that outlet.

It's so hard to do this unilaterally. All the places for kids to be have other adults interrupting and stepping in to stop them from doing something gross or "dangerous."

Agreed that constructivist play is the best way to handle this. However, without fully developed ethicality, it also I think ends up fostering an environment where abusive behavior is not only common but likely becomes a central characteristic.

How might we allow for this kind of free form play without it fostering and enacting the kinds of bigotry that the very young do not have the experience to be able to process without hurting one another?

When I was a kid me and the neighborhood kids went and fought using rolled up newspaper, or went exploring in the creeks. Pretty recent, but also a result of growing up in the woods far from major cities.
