"Lesbian" is very clearly and broadly understood as "a woman who is attracted to women." If you're not a woman, it's silly to complain if others refuse to refer to you as a lesbian, whether you're a man, non-binary, or any other sort of person who is not a woman.
I agree that the gender/sex, identity vs. anatomy mess mucks the whole thing up a bit, but if you are a person with female anatomy who absolutely does not want to be regarded as a woman, "lesbian" is a terrible term to assign to yourself.

While I’m not an advocate for neologisms in this big gender identity melting pot, it appears to be the only solution. In the interim, I can understand why “lesbian” was used as a proxy as they are attracted to others of the same sex, and both (presumably) have female anatomy

The lesbian community has existed for a very long time, and the expectation within the community is that if you're using the term, you're a woman who exclusively dates women. "Actually, I'm using it differently and you're bullying me" looks & quacks like manufactured victimhood

Okay, I get it now. "Lesbian" indeed makes no sense. I am thoroughly confused. And I feel really old, too ! So we have at least three aspects of identity: sexuality, gender, and sex. And a non, female, male, and dual for each. So it's going to be 4^3= 64 possibilities !!
