Biometrics are superior to passwords for most users, but riskier for high-value targets. By social verification, are you imagining a referral code system? Or something more like a PGP key-signing party?
AFAIK, most people would be relatively well-secured by keeping a second cell phone with a number they treated like a password, and only provided for security purposes. Fails in the case of a DB hack but otherwise pretty solid(?)
