I see we've hit peak California, wherein the state solves its housing crisis by simply kidnapping the homeless https://twitter.com/dillonliam/status/1166077302985252864 …pic.twitter.com/UdBRaI0pE3

er, sorry — "obligating" the homeless "to accept" being placed involuntarily under a roof of the state's choosing. Simpler libertarian-leaning minds like my own are prone to thinking that this sounds a lot like jail
100% but seeing my neighborhood become unsafe to walk around in during the day has really fucked with my anarchism. If all property were private, it wouldn’t be an issue, but given that public places exist, the options seem to be...
- cushy sleeping prisons (above) - actually enforcing our laws (resulting in less cushy 24-hour prison time, living back on the street, rinse and repeat) - being overrun by methheads, etc - ??? Does anyone know of solutions that are pro-freedom both in the short and long-term?
I can only assume that if you don't feel safe on the street during the day, you would feel something like abject terror at the prospect of sharing a "cushy sleeping prison" with the same folks overnight, which is presumably why there are empty shelter beds
Oh man, I assumed they had their own quarters at least, but having to be a bldg full of them even with your own place—idk how I forgot about that bit. I had a homeless friend who refused to go to shelters for that reason.
Might be ok if authorities actually treated the distinct groups separately— addicts in one place, mentally ill in another, down-on-their-luck in another, etc. Still might be shittier than just prison for offenders. Ick.
But the prevalent attitude of “they’re all just down on their luck” is clearly counterproductive and drives me nuts. -_-
IMO, this is the primary reason the police are relegated to performing "the tent city shuffle" periodically and not much else. Too much hand-wringing re: overpolicing even when we're talking about actual crime. Solution: just "jail" everybody, call it a human right or something
