"People's IQs are fixed throughout their life" is simply not true. Child IQ and adult IQ are pretty well-correlated at the population level. That is not the same thing. https://slatestarcodex.com/2017/09/27/against-individual-iq-worries/ … https://twitter.com/TheEconomist/status/1165894057715019777 …pic.twitter.com/kKfjGFQeqF

Here's a randomly generated sample with a correlation of 0.66. The closer any one data point is to the dashed line, the closer it is to an example of a "fixed" IQ. There's a clear relationship, but this is not nearly as strong as most people have come to expectpic.twitter.com/RqpQuPkeV4

Of course, this doesn't *necessarily* imply that there is anything *you* can do to alter your own or your child's IQ trajectory. And it certainly doesn't imply anything about *what* you would do. But it certainly leaves the ground there fertile

I agree, just one minor point. Measurement error weakens the correlation, hence the underlying true correlation of the latent trait between time 1 & 2 will be slightly larger.

Yeah, and worth noting that IQ tests correlate with each other at 0.7 or 0.8, so plenty of room for measurement error.

I recall that IQ is calculated using an age component. If that’s right, then it seems natural for mathematical variance to decline as ages go up. The difference between a 1 year old and a 2 year old is huge, while the difference between a 25yo and a 26yo is not.

But my mid IQ self has never run the numbers to check on that.

Parents CAN do plenty to lower their kids IQ. Such as just giving up on their children, and not encouraging active learning. So parents should try to make their kids smarter.

Not true. The smart kids will learn even if you hide their books in the attic. The dumb kids won’t learn even if you hide their food in the books.

Any transformation not forbidden by the laws of physics is achievable, given the right knowledge. (But yeah, we may not have the knowledge in this case. Nor want it…)

Interesting that the conversation about ways to alter IQ usually hit on "designer babies," but not something like creating drugs that alter the enzymes in the brain that moderate lipids, and certainly not anything that considers how neural or knowledge structures are built outpic.twitter.com/wU7dvv8clm

The critical question is "compared to what?" I don't have a hard time believing that even a mediocre school can produce more intellectual growth than the sort of jobs someone is likely to get after dropping out, especially if all of their free time is consumed working 2-3 of them
