When people say that, they usually mean that you shouldn't care what random people think (= conventional wisdom).

I dunno, I think I've seen a lot of examples that seemed pretty broadly inclusive of everyone aside from immediate family and *maybe* close friends. And the impact of the former is highly variable

I'm pretty sure that a lot of the people who say "don't care about..." are probably either lying/in denial of their reality or a sociopath/psychopath.

Bingo. The majority can be wrong (and often is), but this suggests an individual should be more humble and thoughtful about their own rectitude, not blithe and arrogant.
