Perhaps the reasoning thought to support any rule should be integral to its documentation. And term limits for rules/laws should be a thing.
One of the broadest things I've changed my mind on in recent years is the appropriate way to approach Chesterton's fence. Old Me said "burn it to the ground." New Me says that people can build fences for good or bad reasons, and often both, but fences don't just build themselves

agreed. a corollary is if no one can explain the reasoning behind the fence anymore, feel free to burn with glee. "because the fence has always been here" is not understanding it.
