I really dislike "self-care" culture, not because I think it's too indulgent but because it often feels like it's framing the relationship a person should have with themselves like that of a chronically ill patient + a live-in nurse

I don't disagree. I think that religion at worst was an adaptation to give people a consistent sense of purpose. Among other things. Makes you wonder if developing a sense of morality was an adaptation to prevent depression. At least at some level.

Hmm. Mostly see the term being used in two ways: by activists and by people talking about a chronic mental/physical condition. The 2 groups tend to use it quite differently. Your reading is right on for the way the second group thinks of the concept.
