There's an investigative podcast — called "Room 20" — about a man, presumed to be in a vegetative state, unidentified & kept on life support for 15 years. The bulk of the series focuses on other issues, but I'm left horrified by one simple fact:

My doctor friend told me something like half of all the money we spend in healthcare is in the final two weeks. I worked as a CNA on the cardiac unit for 5 years and it is really horrific the way people will hold on to their family literally forcing them to live similar to that.

I work at a care facility and it's my job to extend lives of terrible suffering every day. One patient is very much like the one you describe. Some do nothing but scream and cry every day and since they cant eat they are fed through a tube extending a life void of any semblance
