There's an investigative podcast — called "Room 20" — about a man, presumed to be in a vegetative state, unidentified & kept on life support for 15 years. The bulk of the series focuses on other issues, but I'm left horrified by one simple fact:

How sure are we that the details are true? Vegetative but capable of feeling pain? That doesn’t sound like vegetative.

He was presumed vegetative for 15 years. A neurologist was brought in who provided an analysis, the professional opinion being that his responses indicated an ability to hear, see, & perceive pain, though many repetitions of the test would be required to give a determination.
