There's an investigative podcast — called "Room 20" — about a man, presumed to be in a vegetative state, unidentified & kept on life support for 15 years. The bulk of the series focuses on other issues, but I'm left horrified by one simple fact:

There's something else, central to the way the host frames the narrative: his identity is discovered, and he's undocumented; an illegal immigrant. She doesn't share his full name, because he would likely be deported, which would of course likely result in his death. Yeah.

This is a rare case where euthanasia is moral. I don't say that lightly.

At bare minimum, they should be giving him copious doses of morphine during these procedures, which I assume they don't do because it would dramatically increase the odds of a fatal event. But frankly, that seems FINE relative to this absolute nightmare

Is it because of a law that prevents them from allowing him to die?

I lack any expertise to really answer this, but my understanding is that barring a known family member choosing to end your life, the medical system is required to perform life-preserving care indefinitely for anyone who winds up in the system
