There's absolutely no reason for the question ever to be framed as "working people just trying to get through their day safely vs. addicted mentally ill people who need compassion." Zero people on either side are better off when people who are violently psychotic are unsupervised

If someone has just conmitted an act of violence and appears likely to commit further acts of violence if they're released, you don't release them. This isn't hard. You're not being "too hard" on someone by preventing them from killing someone
