Novelty statues, parody conferences, hula hoops, tutus, and clowning workshops aren't my idea of fun or play. But I think it's kind of shitty to say that people enjoying them are "broken." Same reason I don't kinkshame. What excites you is okay. It doesn't have to excite me.
There're rare people who *are* really into tutus/dress-up, hula hooping, etc., I've met them! But in this new age of performative fun there are lots of people going through the motions of fun, getting the photo & wishing there were more to it. I've met a *lot* more of them
my read of mason’s take: it’s not that being childish is bad in of itself, but that many people use that as a sort of crutch - kind of like how a sense of humor is great except if you use it to deflect responsibility and necessary discomfort
