I keep wondering when a Giuliani type is going to run for mayor of SF. Why hasn’t it happened yet? https://twitter.com/Austen/status/1162763529268580352 …

man these 'poop on sidewalk is disgusting' style tweets get my goat, as if it or homeless addicts are a real threat to 'safety' and not just something to be sad and compassionate about. like sure they smash car windows and sometimes rant as you pass by, that's about it.

After living in Venice Beach for a year in a neighborhood with a lot of RV/car-camping & scattered tents, I've come to the conclusion that homeless communities are really variable. I actually felt safer there walking home at night *because* of the homeless. Not so here.

Thefts seemed a lot less common. I never saw a broken window. The homeless people there seemed more integrated into local goings-on. Some of the guys who lived in tents on my street brought their dogs to the dog park & they played w/ housed people's dogs while we all talked, etc.

I was thinking about it last night and wondering if I presented a false premise—good chance the people breaking into cars mostly aren't homeless. my friend caught a guy in the act of stealing worthless stuff from her car, he was just some total moron, not homeless

I think a lot of these car thefts are worked by people who've essentially professionalized the endeavor & probably aren't homeless. But when property crime is basically ignored, the homeless who do it are super visible. The tent camp w an open air bike chop shop is really obvious
