I've invited a few new friends from around the world to SF now (@visakanv, @TheAnnaGat, @MatjazLeonardis), and it's been disconcerting to notice how comfortable I've become with the ambient on-street violence relative to my guests https://t.co/nDdbC1wxB2

Immediately after picking up Matjaz from the airport, we went to a nearby drive-through to get him some food. A man was in the parking lot shouting and throwing anything he could find in random directions for no discernable reason. I struggled to explain why this didn't shock me.

I find the situation with property crime more shocking when I reflect on it. Because I can’t think of anyone I know who has been assaulted by a stranger, and I still feel pretty safe personally, but bike stealing and breaking into cars is so normal I take it for granted!

mugging seems to be a bigger problem in downtown berkeley than in SF for some reason (mostly easily intimidated students I guess). muggers tend not to be schizo addict ramblers tho afaik. property crime seems kinda inevitable with so much income inequality & SF as homeless mecca

There's all sorts of visible crime across the SFBA that only makes sense in a context where enforcement is predictably lax. There's an encampment not two blocks from my home with a makeshift bike chop shop in plain view

Ha, wow. touché but even so I'd rather the cops err on the side of not fucking with homeless people for once, even if they're stealing bikes and bashing windows or god forbid leaving their poop in public, in the scheme of things not a big deal imo—not as bad as Police Presence...

the way I see it sure you could throw some fraction in jails, but unless something more fundamental is done about the wave of drug use (a lot of it being self-medication), e.g. access to psychiatrists and antipsychotics in particular, seems mostly symbolic to me

Easy to say when it's not your bike or package that's stolen, your window smashed in. It's not just the violation. A lot of people are struggling here. The wealthy can protect their stuff. I cried when a package I couldn't really afford was ripped open while I was working.

the city stole my car, friends harassed, my friend's window was smashed, I've had shit stolen from my porch, and I'm broke, I can't replace anything without great difficulty. It's not easy to say 'let it go', it's hard, but I believe it is just.

I don't. I don't think it is just that someone stole from me. I don't think it would have been just even if it was a theft I could financially bear. There's a reason I didn't respond by grabbing the nearest unwatched box on a neighbor's porch.

rarely is theft just, what I mean is I think it's just to recognize that at least we have roofs, and not make their lives worse as a population just because some of them are shit people who make our lives worse. cops already harass them enough. they're cops. worse than thieves.

I was homeless for six months or so a few years back and I'm only not currently by grace of friends, idk if that makes me biased or what
