I think preservation efforts are in large part driven by some kind of FOMO: just because a particular specie doesn't really offer us anything of value now, it might in the future (eg: penicillium before 1928)

The Endangered Species Act is just a way for Government to take land and control us. They are used and abused on a regular basis. Godless Darwinists suddenly don’t believe in survival of the fittest when it comes to fairy shrimp & the Delta Smelt. Backfired big time in CA.
