I always assumed the cocoon was the thing that contained the goo when it was undergoing transformation.
Nah — moths build an exterior cocoon out of silk, leaves, etc, but they ultimately become a self-contained pupa inside, equivalent to a butterfly's chrysalis. It's very important not to damage the pupa. Here are a couple of this species' pupae:pic.twitter.com/ieMYmHADJR
