(Cutting it open doesn't interrupt the process?)
It shouldn't, but AFAICT this might be the first attempt at capturing video for this particular species, so it's possible that this will stress him out too badly to continue. I'll definitely feel awful if that happens

I always assumed the cocoon was the thing that contained the goo when it was undergoing transformation.

Nah — moths build an exterior cocoon out of silk, leaves, etc, but they ultimately become a self-contained pupa inside, equivalent to a butterfly's chrysalis. It's very important not to damage the pupa. Here are a couple of this species' pupae:pic.twitter.com/ieMYmHADJR
