      Equifax’s $700M fine feels like pittance compared to what it would have been if they were based in Silicon Valley and labeled as a “tech company.” Their breach had material, devastating financial consequences to people. FB is getting fined over data that has caused feelings.

      Imagine if Facebook were assigning me a score based in large part on information it was collecting on me from third parties, sold that score & data to *other* third parties who might use it to deny me a home/car loan, & charged *me* a hefty subscription just to know the number

      So I totally agree it's a horrible racket, but you can get free access to your reports & many credit cards are giving "free" scores now, too.

      annual scores and reports, usually, which don't help you much if you're actively working on repairing your credit

      Not just annual. If you go to the "start a dispute" section, you can get a copy as part of the process. Also, I believe you're entitled to a free report if you've recently been denied credit.

      This is actually a lot harder and more time-consuming than it looks, as I know personally from dealing with identity theft last year. I had to spend >15 hours scouring my own records for various proof that I had grounds to file an ID theft report + a police report

      I did actually end up paying for report access with at least one of the bureaus because they were so unresponsive
