So I totally agree it's a horrible racket, but you can get free access to your reports & many credit cards are giving "free" scores now, too.

Seems pretty insidious, but hard to get around the fact that reputation is the fundamental currency. Are there alternatives? There's blockchain, but I worry that that could become even worse

Unfortunately, it appears to me that this particular form of 'reputation' is meant solely to gauge the profitability of exploiting those listed.

Even that's not entirely analogous. You can quit Facebook. Opting out of the credit system, on the other hand, is next to impossible.

Mostly agree, but do they use it to deny loans, or shift the terms offered curve while the deny line remains static? Would the % of people denied loans decrease if they did not have that data?
